FLUIDIZED BED COMBUSTION
OF SPENT PULPING LIQUORS:
Green Bay Packaging was one of the first paper mills in the United States to
recognize the detrimental effect of spent pulping liquors on the environment.
Working with the Dorr-Oliver Company in concert with the Environmental
Protection Agency, Green Bay Packaging successfully developed and
commercialized a unique, non-water polluting method of burning spent sulfite
cooking chemicals. The process separated and oxidized the organic portion,
while recovering the inorganics as a valuable by-product. This process operated
from its development and implementation in 1963 until February 1991, when all
pulping activities ceased at the Green Bay Mill.
