ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
AGENCY ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE AWARD:
The Arkansas Kraft Mill Division of Green Bay Packaging in 1992 was selected by
the Environmental Protection Agency -- Region VI for its Administrator's
Environmental Excellence Award for National Pollutant Discharge Elimination
System Industrial Compliance. Specifically, Arkansas Kraft's on-site wastewater
treatment was recognized for its consistent record of compliance with NPDES
permit requirements.
COMPLETED CLOSURE OF THE
PROCESS WATER SYSTEM:
After the Green Bay Mill's conversion to a 100% recycled mill in February 1991,
innovative actions to completely close the process water system were
undertaken. In September 1992, these activities were completed. As a result,
the Green Bay Mill became one of the first mills in the world to have a closed
process water system, without any direct discharge of process wastewater.
